Protecting Your Air Quality During Wildfire Season: Essential Tips for Healthy Living

Updated: Jun 19, 2023

As wildfires continue to ravage parts of Canada, air quality has emerged as a pressing concern for everyone. Poor air quality can have detrimental effects on individuals, regardless of their health condition. Breathing clean air is vital for overall well-being, making it imperative to shield ourselves from the smoke and toxins resulting from wildfires. We rely on air 24/7, emphasizing the significance of maintaining clean and healthy air for our respiratory system. Just as water filters and shower/bath filters are essential for a healthy lifestyle, ensuring clean air in our living spaces is equally critical.

Furthermore, it's important to acknowledge that some of these fires started in May, still technically spring, as summer officially begins on June 21 this year. This means that forest fires are far from being extinguished for the year. Being prepared and proactive in safeguarding your air quality will enable you and your family to navigate future environmental challenges more effectively.

Wildfire smoke is not solely composed of particles from burning forests; it also contains a wide range of harmful chemicals and toxins. When buildings burn or fire retardants are employed, the resulting smoke becomes a toxic mixture of chemicals and toxic heavy metals. Protecting yourself from these hazardous elements is of utmost importance. With that in mind, I aim to empower you with various options to safeguard your air quality, promote your health, and preserve your future fertility. The following recommendations provide a range of choices, allowing you to select what suits your financial situation and available resources.

The information shared on protecting your air quality is invaluable, extending beyond the current wildfire season. So, let's delve into the 7 measures you can take to shield yourself effectively:

Me wearing N95 mask at work outside on June 3, 2023
  1. Masks: Invest in a high-quality mask, such as an N100 (the best one), N99, or N95 mask, to shield your lungs from soot, debris, and pollution.

    1. If you don't have access to a mask, you can use a damp cloth. Here is what to do: place a clean cloth under the faucet or in a bowl of water so the entire cloth is wet. Wring excess water out of the cloth so it is damp but not dripping with water. Use both hands to pick up the damp cloth, leaving some space between your hands so you can place it over your nose and mouth and breathe through the damp cloth.

  2. Air Purifiers: Consider saving up for an air purifier with HEPA filtration technology. IQ Air's HyperHEPA filtration (is the best one), Air Doctor (the one I have), and Austin Air are excellent options for effectively removing smoke particles and reducing toxicity.

  3. Plants: Incorporate air-purifying plants into your home, such as Peace Lily, Parlor Palm, Lady Palm, and Chrysanthemum (recommended by NASA's Clean Air Study). Please be aware that some of these plants are toxic when consumed, so keep an eye on your kids & pets.

    1. I also love the Snack Plant. It just doesn't filter ammonia

  4. Supplements: Strengthen your respiratory health by taking supplements like Mullein Leaf, Vitamin C, and Lomatium Root. These supplements can support your lungs and aid in detoxification.

    1. Mullein Leaf helps strengthen the oxygen sacs of the lungs.

    2. Vitamin C (look for full spectrum or whole food supplement) is an expectorant which helps to loosen and remove debris from the air passages.

    3. Lomatium Root is highly effective at aiding respiratory ailments and also helps the body detoxify.

  5. Herbal Teas and Spices: Herbal teas such as Peppermint, Turmeric, and Ginger can help open bronchial tubes and reduce inflammation. Additionally, incorporating spices like Garlic, Rosemary, Sage, and Thyme in your diet can improve blood flow to the lungs, aiding detoxification.

  6. Hydration: Stay well-hydrated with lemon or lime water, coconut water, and fresh fruit and vegetable juices. Hydration supports your body's detoxification process, helping eliminate toxins.

  7. Other Items: Consider having a car filter, a k9 Mask for your dog, and an Air Quality Monitor in your home to keep track of the indoor air quality and take necessary actions when needed.

As environmental disasters like wildfires occur frequently, it is crucial to protect your air quality and prioritize your health. By implementing these 7 tips, you can empower yourself and your family to face future challenges with resilience. While the threat of wildfires may persist, you can ensure that your living space remains a safe haven, providing you with clean and healthy air for a better quality of life.
