Hidden Harmful Ingredients in “Clean” Bread: What You Need to Know

Updated: Aug 18

If you've been making healthier choices and paying more attention to what you buy, you may have switched from classic commercial bread to healthier options like gluten-free bread or what seems to be "clean" bread. Many of us are aware of the obvious culprits in bread that can harm our well-being. You've learned to steer clear of toxic industrial oils like canola, highly refined flours, artificial colours and preservatives, processed sugars, and additives like dough conditioners. 🍞

However, even bread marketed as "clean" can contain harmful ingredients that pose risks to your health. Here’s a closer look at some of these ingredients and why you might want to avoid them. 🥖

Yeast

  • GMO Contamination: Yeast is usually made from GMO wheat, GMO sugar beets, and other genetically modified organisms (GMOs), even if the bread is certified organic due to widespread seed cross-contamination.

  • Transformation Through Diet: Yeast, as a microorganism, absorbs the properties of what it consumes. If it consumes harmful substances, it becomes harmful itself.

  • Lack of Transparency: The term "yeast" on ingredient labels can be vague. It doesn't specify the type of yeast or its source, and companies are not required to disclose this information.

  • Glutamic Acid Content: Many yeasts, like brewer’s yeast, contain high amounts of glutamic acid, which mimics MSG. Baker’s yeast is often made from GMOs, and can even be produced using petroleum byproducts or sewage sludge.

  • Fermentation Concerns: Yeast is involved in fermentation, which has its own set of issues (more info on this in this blog).

Vinegar

  • Toxin Preservation: Vinegar preserves toxins in the body, driving them deeper into cells and organs, making them harder to cleanse.

  • Dehydration: Vinegar can dehydrate the body at a deep organ level.

  • Calcium Depletion: It depletes the body of calcium and can erode teeth and bones.

Eggs

  • Pathogen Feeding: All eggs feed pathogens, which can cause health problems, including autoimmune diseases.

Psyllium Husk

  • Gut Health Impact: Psyllium husk can be harsh on the intestines and potentially harm gut health, depending on individual sensitivity.

  • Please note that some people can handle small amounts of psyllium husk int their baked goods.

Fermented Foods

  • Historical Context: Fermentation was a survival technique in the past but isn’t necessarily health-promoting.

  • Unproven Theories: The idea that fermented foods are good for gut health is a theory that has never been proven and is, in fact, incorrect.

  • Microorganism Concerns: Fermented foods harbour microorganisms that thrive on decaying food, which are not beneficial for human health.

Corn

  • GMO Prevalence: Due to widespread seed cross-contamination, almost all corn, even organic and non-GMO certified, is likely contaminated with GMOs.

  • Pathogen Feeding: Corn feeds pathogens, leading to health issues, including autoimmune diseases.

  • Inflammation: Corn creates substantial inflammation in the body.

Baking Powder

  • Cornstarch Content: Baking powder usually contains cornstarch, and companies are not required to specify or disclose this.

  • When baking at home, buy baking powder that is aluminum and cornstarch-free.

Xanthan Gum

  • Corn-Based: Xanthan gum is made from corn and a fermentation byproduct.

Gluten

  • Universal Impact: Gluten can lead to health problems for everyone over time, not just those with sensitivities or celiac disease, due to its role in pathogen manipulation.

  • Pathogen Feeding: Like other ingredients, gluten feeds pathogens and contributes to autoimmune diseases.

Being aware of the hidden dangers in so-called "clean" breads is crucial for truly protecting your health. Always be vigilant about ingredient labels and question what goes into your food.

While store-bought "clean" breads are generally a better choice than classic whole grain or white breads, they can still contain hidden ingredients that may contribute to ongoing symptoms. If you're struggling with health issues and feeling stuck, these seemingly "clean" options could be the hidden culprits in your kitchen.
