Beyond Symptoms: Nutrition Approach to PCOS and Endometriosis

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis are two prevalent reproductive health conditions that affect a significant number of women worldwide. According to statistics, approximately 1 in 10 women of reproductive age suffer from PCOS, while more than 11% of American women between 15 and 44 are affected by endometriosis. (1, 2). These numbers underscore the urgent need for support and effective management strategies for women grappling with these conditions.

Recognizing the profound impact of nutrition on women struggling with PCOS, endometriosis, infertility, and other reproductive health issues is truly enlightening. Drawing from my experiences, I've gained valuable insights into effective approaches to support reproductive health, and I'm eager to share them with others.

Dietary Considerations:

One of the cornerstones of managing PCOS and endometriosis is adopting a supportive diet. Fruits and vegetables are crucial allies in nurturing reproductive health.

Numerous studies consistently emphasize the significant influence of diet on the symptoms linked to these conditions, underscoring the critical role of a diet abundant in fruits and vegetables (3):

A diet, rich in vegetables, fruits, and omega-3 fatty acids from fish, and containing ample calcium, and vitamin D is connected to lower risk of developing endometriosis; higher intake of red meat, coffee, and trans fats appears to increase risk.
A 2004 study published in the journal Human Reproduction found that women who consumed three or more servings of fruit per day recorded a 14% lower likeihood of developing endometriosis than women who consumed one portion or less daily.
Women who consume one or more servings of citrus fruit daily dropped their risk of endometriosis by over 20% compared with those who consumed citrus fruits only once a week.

Understanding the powerful influence of diet on your body's healing process, it's crucial to incorporate specific foods into your diet to support reproductive wellness. For instance, incorporating sweet potatoes into your diet can aid in reducing fibroids and cysts, including ovarian cysts associated with PCOS. Additionally, raspberry leaf tea is a potent tonic for enhancing fertility and supporting reproductive wellness in both men and women. Nettle leaf, renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties, also offers substantial benefits for reproductive organ health.

Equally vital is the awareness of foods that may exacerbate reproductive health issues. Avoiding anti-fertility foods such as eggs, pork, lamb, fish (except sardines & wild salmon), and dairy products is advised, as these can perpetuate inflammation in the reproductive system and worsen conditions like PCOS and endometriosis.

In addition to these recommendations, incorporating other reproductive-supporting foods into your diet can further enhance your overall health. Foods such as asparagus, spinach, artichokes, kale, celery, butter leaf lettuce, potatoes, garlic, sprouts, microgreens, and raw honey offer a wealth of nutrients that support reproductive wellness and overall vitality (4).

Supplementation Support:

In conjunction with dietary adjustments, supplementation can play a pivotal role in promoting reproductive health. Key supplements like Folate (5-methyltetrahydrofolate) offer invaluable support for conditions such as infertility, PCOS, and endometriosis. Additionally, incorporating zinc, B12, barley grass juice powder, and spirulina into your regimen can further bolster reproductive wellness.
